How Drugs & Alcohol Affect Safety at Work

Drugs and alcohol impair judgment, reaction time, coordination, and decision-making. That sharply increases the risk of accidents, injuries, and fatalities. On the job, impairment can cause:

Pills beside a glass of water

Reduced concentration

Trouble focusing on tasks and following procedures.

Lab technicians processing test samples

Impaired coordination

More slips, trips, and falls, and unsafe equipment operation.

Gloved hand holding a test tube

Slower reaction time

Not responding fast enough to a hazard.

Gloved hand holding a lab beaker

Poor judgment

Risky decisions and shortcuts.

Prescription & Over-the-Counter Medications

Even legal medications can impair your ability to work safely. If you take any medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist about side effects, and whether it’s safe to drive or operate equipment. Let your supervisor know if a medication could affect your work.

Marijuana and Ohio Workplaces

Marijuana is legal for adults in Ohio, but that doesn’t make it acceptable at work. Your employer’s drug-free policy still applies. For DOT-regulated employees such as CDL drivers, marijuana use remains prohibited under federal rules, on or off duty.

Signs of Impairment at Work

Watch for these signs in yourself and others:

Slurred speech

Difficulty concentrating

Unusual behavior or mood changes

Bloodshot eyes

The smell of alcohol

Coordination problems or unsteady movement
